A man has been taken off a flight heading to Jamaica from Canada after ridiculously shouting that he had the virus.

28 year old Instagrammer, Potok Philippe, who hails from Ontario, Canada had unwittingly did the prank in an attempt to go viral on social media, thereby causing chaos on the flight.

The plane which originally took off from Toronto had to turn back mid-flight due to the scare and panic created by Philippe.

On arrival back to Toronto, Philippe was arrested and charged for mischief.

The social media influencer who is also a musician with over 30,000 followers on Instagram, claimed he didn’t know the severity to his actions and the worldwide concerns on the recent outbreak of coronavirus in China.

In his statement, Potok Philippe original name John Philippe said: ‘I’m very, very sorry for my ignorance and not understanding that it’s an epidemic, that people hear the word and it’s become synonymous with threats.

“I thought it would spark a reaction. I did not think what I was doing would be considered illegal or warrant that type of response. In retrospect it probably wasn’t the best thing to do.”

WestJet which is the airline in which Philippe and other passengers were on board when he made the prank has issued a statement condemning his actions: “Out of an abundance of caution, our crew followed all protocols for infectious disease on board, including sequestering an individual who made an unfounded claim regarding coronavirus.

“Due to the involvement of law enforcement, as well as the privacy of our guests, we are not able to provide additional information about the incident at this time.”
